“The city’s money would be better spent helping teens access health care, birth control and high-quality sexual and reproductive health education, not an ad campaign intended to create shock value.”

So apparently Planned Parenthood is so mad about these new anti-teen pregnancy ads because they say it's shaming parents, and the money can be used to give them alternatives and education... while I do agree with that, people don't seem to get that the facts on these posters ARE TRUE! You will be paying child support, you won't fix a relationship, your child will lose opportunities. Are we so PC that the truth is "hurtful" Screw hurtful, know the facts!

A couple reasons why I agree with these "shock value" poster:

1. It is true that teen pregnancy has been glamorized with TV shows such as Teen Mom, this "glamourization" believe it or not actually makes teen girls think teen pregnancy is cool. These girls need a wake up call, having a baby is not cool or fun, you are messing with a life who had no choice in who it's mother is.

2. Kids having kids perpetuates the cycle of poverty, the parents either never reach their full potential or they have to work 3 times as hard to be middle class. College is not affordable to non-parenting teens, let alone a parenting teen who has to pay for school, daycare, twice as much food, clothing and utilities.

3. Teen parents have teen parents. A child of a teen mother is more likely to become a teen mother themselves because they see their mother doing OK and believe they will be OK.

4. Many children of teen mothers are supported by family, which places extra burden on grandparents who had finished raising kids. This can effect the grandparents retirement, savings and budget to support both the mother and the child.

5. Many teen mothers make the same mistakes and have more than one child within 5 years of the first, doubling all burdens the first child created.

6. Some women actually think a baby will save a relationship.

7. Many teens want to have babies to fill the void of love and affection they are not getting from their families and boyfriends.

Clearly the way we have been doing this isn't making a difference, so to NYC, I say GO FOR IT! Keep the posters up because some people need a wake up call.

Alot of teens really do have babies by accident, and they do what they can to recover, they educate themselves, they change their ways and they make a life for themselves, those are not the people who need to see this message. The truth however, is the truth. Could you imagine how many more cases of AIDS there would be if we had never gone for "shock value"?
