Mid-Year Closet Review- Are you due?

MAN! Am I glad that’s over with! What’s that? Oh, just my MID-YEAR REVIEW *Gasps!!* Yea pros and cons but the cons were mostly that I have too many pros so *meh* pretty much grade awesome JHave you ever thought about giving your closet a mid-year review? Most of us, me included, have clothes in our closet that we can tell you at least one story about how we wore it out and ended up making out with a guy in a bunny costume at warehouse party….. wait no? just me? Well anyways, you get the point, it was a crazy fun time and you saw some things and took some pictures, spilled some stuff on it, repaired that zipper or re-heeled that heel… 3 years ago. FOR THE LOVE OF FASHION! LADIES! Your closet is not a museum!! It’s time for a mid-year review!!!

The transition from summer to fall is the absolute PERFECT time to do a mid-year review because most people are packing away their open-back half shirts and pulling out their sweater dresses. When you make your annual closet exchange, make sure that purposely destroyed pair of now accidentally destroyed jeans doesn’t have any of these CONS:

1. Too big/small-  About 5 years ago I bought a pair of Abercrombie and Fitch jeans, size 3? I think don’t quote, they were extra long and had destroyed patches… very trendy I must say. Well these jeans were the best I ever had cuz they are still in my closet, but now they are size I have no clue, the destroyed patches turned into holes and both knees ripped out. Yea these jeans got big with me and I love how they get small in the dryer, they went from bootcut to boyfriend style and are still trucking even though they are too big for my current size. I’m gonna give them a PASS. But that Ann Taylor Chiffon dress suitable for work that’s a size 10, that one’s gotta go! WHY? If it is too big and you either can’t take it in, don’t want to pay to take it in, or don’t think it will look good altered, BIG FAT FAIL! There are only certain items that can look good on you when they are too big, that’s t-shirts, boyfriend style jeans, sweaters and dresses that are meant to be loose (even that’s pushing it) everything else should be tailored or donated (I respect those who sell them I prefer to donate to women’s shelters). Because we don’t want to see your crack or bra through your arm hole, and it’s really annoying to have to keep pulling at clothes that don’t fit. PLUS it does nothing for your figure!
Too small is a FAIL for anything. Period.

A seamtress is your best friend, if you don’t want to part ways, go get it tailored.

2. Ripped/ Stretched or Permanently marked- You may love *insert item* but the fact is, if it is not ripped in a stylish way or marked so that you can redesign it, toss it. Stretched clothes never look good, the material is compromised and it doesn’t look vintage… it looks old. Each wash only makes it worse.

Some ideas to save ripped jeans: turn them into shorts, wash the shorts after you cut them to get the fryed edge and experiment with dip dying (literally dipping the shorts into the dye) to achieve the oh so popular ombre look.

3. Hasn’t been worn in years- It’s true, history repeats itself in fashion and it’s likely that top you wore 5 years ago may come back into style. But if you didn’t care to wear it when it was in style, what makes you think you will wear it when it comes back around? FAIL give it a new home, one where it will be appreciated. If getting rid of things makes you sad, just remember, you’re making room and justifying new purchases!

4. Pit stains-  We all sweat, get over it. Our white tops suffer in the summer, if you’re folding up a white tee, check the pits. If it’s yellow or discolored, move the shirt from the good pile, to the clean the house/ wash the car pile. These clean-yet-dirty tees should never see the light of an actual outfit unless worn as an under shirt. Evening dying them may not salvage it, the discoloration comes from the aluminum in your deodorant mixed with sweat, a combination that will surely show up under even the darkest of dyes.

Should you try to salvage a pit-stained shirt, DO NOT USE BLEACH, it actually makes it worse. Instead, use Oxiclean or Raise armpit stain remover. Use a deodorant that is aluminum free to prevent future stains.

5. Over washed- If you pull out a red dress and it looks rust colored, its time to go! Clothes are meant to withstand only so much and if you think about, a wash cycle takes a lot out of a garment. Not only the exposure to washing detergent, but the motion as well. Dyes fade, knits fuzz up, elastic breaks and etc. Accept that your garment has reached the end of its life and retire it. Dull clothes do NOTHING for your style, clothes that have been subjected to free color radicals (pink whites) don’t look any better either.

To save your clothes, use color catchers for brights, woolite for darks, and always change the washer settings according to the clothes. Here are some tips to prevent fading.

To redesign damaged clothes, dying (i love this!) always goes well if there are no stains that will cause discoloration.

On average, I would say clothes should cycle out of your closet about every 2 years. Give or take for good quality and style, but the majority of clothes are damaged, over washed, stretched out or just plain never coming back in style because they shouldn’t have been in style in the first place!

Fall 2012 Runway to Everyday Trends Translations!

Happy Hump Day Everyone! Hooray! The weekend is almost here!

It’s getting colder at night, the days are shorter, its pretty clear that Fall is coming! I even unpacked my sweaters last night, I don’t know about y’all but I am ready for boots, cardi’s and sweater dresses!! Take a look at my Fall 2012 trend translations, because we all know the runway looks cool, but who gets to really wear it?

1. Red - Red is supposedly the hottest color this fall, any shade! So make sure you stock up with a number of pieces, the good thing about a red piece is that it’s perfect as the focus for an outfit. Here are some red tops worthy of the spotlight:

2. Gold- Gold is set to be a hot color this season, this can be a hard look to pull off, stick to muted gold for daytime or go all out and shine at night!

3. Velvet- OK, I had a face on when I read this, but then I saw the green Gucci velvet dress that’s been going around the internet anddd its kinda grown on me. I think these are some cute velvet fashions that won’t remind you of a terrible prom bomb, plus side velvet is thick like corduroy, perfect for Fall and Winter

4. Bold Geometric Patterns- Matching top and bottom geometric patterns are all over the runway, again, I made a face, but it takes some translating from runway to everyday. I think these patterned outfits are stylish, flattering and fashion forward.

7. Leather-Leather is always a good look for shoes, coats, but do you own a leather dress yet? To avoid looking like a biker babe (unless that’s your thing) I like to choose leather styles that are still feminine and girly even in a tough fabric.

8. Peplums- These aren’t the peplums from the 80’s… or are they? Well no, they aren’t. Alittle shorter, more structured, peplums are really making a comeback this year. A lot of people are scared of them because it makes your hips look big, but remember big hips equals little waist, and everyone can see your just peplumming! (copyrighting that)

Start with the basics... Staple closet items

Good Afternoon Pupils... Class is in session, phones on silent, notebooks out, pencils up.... It's a style post!

While doing some light shopping for the upcoming photo shoot today, I thought about how I would have to say my one favorite thing about fashion, is the versatility and how you make anything your own style. But things that come second nature to me, I realize aren’t always the case for other people, and WALA! A blog post! So let’s start with a list of 10 items every woman should have in her closet, you maybe surprised:

1. The quintessential LBD, that’s Little Black Dress for you newbies- A LBD is a go-to item, perfect for parties, nightlife, coffee with the girls and yes, funerals… as long as the “little” doesn’t equal “slutty”, there is a difference, we will discuss later

2. A blazer- Any color will do, but this jacket can be dressed down, dressed up, dressed sideways, any outfit, any occasion, a blazer is appropriate and sophisticated, go for fitted non-suit blazers and  made this decade preferably (no your moms shoulder pads are NOT hot) If you want shoulder pads, GUESS what! There are ones with shoulder pads

3. Red pumps- peep toe, round toe, pointy toe, pick any one, but you better have a red pump! Red pumps not only go with EVERYTHING but any man will tell you they are one of THE sexiest shoes of all time, something about that pop of color at the end of a long heeled leg makes their skin tingle... among other things

4. A waist belt- Your first one better be black! Then brown! A waist belt is now essential because it’s so GOOD at its job, what’s it’s job? To make your waist look as tiny as possible, in even the biggest of t-shirts/dresses, you can go from potato sack to hourglass, I PROMISE no matter what size you are, you will say “Va Voom” when you look in the mirror!

5. T-shirt Bra- Do I really need to explain why you shouldn’t wear your lace/ bows/ rhinestone bras underneath anything that is unlined or thin? Pick a skin tone color to avoid showing through, keep in mind you may not be able to see it, but a camera might pick up on the red and white stripes

6.  Jeans- Whatever your favorite style is, may or may not be the most flattering, it’s always safe to stick with dark washes, avoid over the top embellishments for your staples you don’t want to be in a business casual meeting and look like a disco ball thanks to the projector! Boot-cut works for everyone, if you think you have wide hips go for wide leg, GASP WHAAA? Wide hips? Wide legs? Yes, because the straight line coming off your hips balances out the “wideness” makes you look longer and longer equals thinner! No hips? Try Flares, the extra curving tricks the eye into giving you an hourglass shape

7. Tennis shoes- because there will come a day when you can’t wear 5 inch heels and you will want a cute pair, if you only get one, go with classic white, I like more feminine styles like Keds or Converse because they don’t make your feet look HUGE, the canvas material comes in numerous designs and once they get dirty, I like to draw or dye them!

8. Umbrella- You may not count this as part of your wardrobe… but I certainly DO! One, it’s obvious why you need one, but two, why not put your signature on it? Umbrellas come in some many adorable patterns, stand out from the crowd! You go through all the trouble of perfect make-up, hair, and clothes and step outside with a blah umbrella, where’s your umph? Where’s your swag? Certainly NOT in that black umbrella

9.  Jacket/Coat- Again, should be oblivious why you need it, but do you really know what it should look like? Short jackets equal short torso, long jackets/coats equal long torso, Everyone looks good in a thin lined, yet warm thigh/hip length coat, whether it’s a trench or pea coat and with a belt, you want to avoid looking puffy AT ALL COSTS, knee length and below can shorten a girl, and the belt again emphasizes your waist so that even in winter, you’re looking hot!

10. DRUMROLL PLEASE! My last staple item is…… A big ol’ bag!- whether its an impromptu trip to the beach or an overnight stay at a friend’s ;) a big bag is calling your name, and I'm sure you’d rather have it when you need than not have it at all. Pick a neutral color if your worried about getting use or be like me! And pick something BOLD! Either way, it should have a large middle pocket, a zipper pocket and a top closure at least, the last thing you want is your most personal belongings spilling out in a flood because your bag doesn’t close

AND there you have it! Adora’s essential wardrobe list… for now. Keep in mind, these are the basics, everything else is extra and up to you!!! Sound off in the comments how you love your staples or if you think there should be more!
