Natural Remedies/ Adora's Diary: 5 Rules to Take Control of your Happiness

Over the last year, I had surgery twice in my abdomen, I suffered from anxiety attacks, depression, stress related illnesses and overall feeling of general lethargy, it was not until I was recovered from my second surgery that I finally started to be able to heal myself, by myself. I had seen plenty of doctors, gastro's, gyno's, internal, external, chiropractor etc... they all wanted to push medicines and tricks to mask the multiple symptoms I was having. I hate taking medicine, I think it poisons your body and masks pain that is meant to tell you "Hey, something is wrong!", I wanted to HEAL the source. I knew I wasn't that sick, I had every test in the book done, vitamin levels, hyda scans, x-rays, ct scans, SURGERY!  But depression will make you seem sick, will take away your life, will affect you even when you don't realize. Depression is so common, the new normal is depressed, this world takes enough out of you, stop taking more from yourself, read these tips to help build strong relationships, to rekindle the old you and erase the damage we do to ourselves.

558826_367047230054697_464627496_n

So I made a vow to myself, to save myself. I started slow but it's getting faster, I took the first step which was:

Rule #1: I will not participate in my unhappiness, if something makes me unhappy, I will leave it alone.

This is a harder rule than you think, because I had to leave not only situations, but people, jobs, homes, to ensure that I was not hindering my recovery. I truly felt like I was fighting for my life at the time, I was a slave to my anxiety reactions, crying fits at home and not being able to eat for hours and days, crippled by my own depression. It hurt to leave those people but that pain went away and I felt lighter, I felt more in control of me and my life. Rule #1 is the reason I am leaving my 9 to 5 cubicle cushy IT job to go to school full time because my heart is in love with learning and it offers a freedom I can only have at this age, 23. Drink wine, entertain friends, take a walk, plant a garden, if it makes you happy, DO IT!

47627_383763395049747_2128712595_n

Rule #2: I will stop focusing on what I can't have and appreciate what I do have.

Humans naturally want what they can't have, and the consequence of this, is that we take for granted what we do have, blessings, people, opportunities, lessons. If you want to be happy, start by being satisfied. A satisfied person is not lazy or mediocre, a satisfied person appreciates and savors their accomplishments as they come. They are happy to wait for the right option because they know it will fulfill their needs wholly. A satisfied person is humble and not jealous, when you are genuinely happy with what you have, then you can go get more.

Rule #3: I will let others in.

602188_419398971486189_1903199415_n

Our society is all about "me, me, me" because when we cared about "you, you, you", we got hurt. Gone are the days of love songs and lovers, here are the days of infidelity and insecurity. IN- that prefix, lacking, lacking fidelity, lacking security, when we are lacking, we are not happy. You must find what you are lacking and supplement it, heal it, but most of us are simply lacking companionship, and most of us are lacking on purpose. As a defense, walls work well on a fort, walls don't work well in friendships, relationships, even just social settings. If you are always on defense, when your walls are breached, you are likely to freak out and hurt someone. Love is a beautiful thing that comes in many forms, if you follow rule #1 and #2 you will be satisfied with who you are, enough to be with someone who makes you happy. But be warned, are they satisfied with who they are? You will never know if you don't let others in. Companionship relieves anxiety, stress, worry and loneliness  but it takes a friend to have a friend, keep your relationships two way streets, pick up the phone when your are lonely, no one can read your mind, participate in your happiness.

Rule #4: Catch up with yourself.

Remember when you were a kid and people would ask you, what do you want to be when you grow up? Have you heard the story about the child who answered "Happy"? Life is so fast, it never stops, sometimes you simply need to catch up with your old friend, You. We over extend ourselves, we lend ourselves to friends, family, work but we don't lend ourselves, to ourself. Perhaps you feel guilt for being so selfish for needing to please yourself, but the truth is, you can't take care of anyone else, if you can't take care of yourself. When you are happy, it shows in everything you do, your kids will be happy, your job performance will improve, your social life will thrive, because people are drawn to happy people. Visit a favorite spot that you haven't seen in years and think about the old you, what were your goals, who was your lover, what did you have? How have you changed, what did you accomplish, what did you learn? Use the past as a lesson to get in touch with yourself, and do what makes your heart sing.

388345_180925532000202_1905168262_n

Rule #5: Feed your body to feed your mind and soul.

If it's one thing I learned from my "sick year" it's that food is vital, you will always need to eat food, food is life. Now most people will probably say, well duh... but when you are unhappy or stressed out, your body can shut down your appetite and even your digestive tract! I lost 30 lbs and had no energy, couldn't think straight, couldn't get out of a fog, until I was able to eat properly, eat regularly, and eat healthy. I had to follow the first 4 rules in order to free my body's hesitation to eat, but once I was on my way to happiness, a beautiful thing happened, I got hungry. I was hungry all the time, my body was craving everything, naturally I have an OK diet, I like fruit, don't eat fast food, I like a variety of food from indian to sushi, so I went to the store and I bought fresh fruit, almonds, and anything else I wanted, it was freeing knowing that I was spending what little money I had on healing my body, which had been betraying me for a year.  You only have one body and it has to last you a lifetime. I know what it's like to be in pain, to have no energy, to not be able to function, it's something you don't want, especially before it is necessary. When you eat better you will naturally feel better, you will notice changes in your energy, alertness and happiness. Good food= Good mood! Stay away from fast foods, fried foods, and sugary foods, you will find it's easier than you think to live healthy and happy when you put in the effort!

Depression and anxiety are serious mental disorders which affect millions of people, you are not alone, you have options. Speak to your doctor before discontinuing any medicine, but try these rules to strengthen your confidence, body and live the life you wish to have. You can do it.

5 Spring 2013 Hair Trends

Here in DC, we are getting teased, we get a couple warm days, a couple beautiful cold days and then wet, ugly days! We haven't quite got to spring yet :(

But I can see Easter and Spring just around the corner, so it was time for some Spring Cleaning! (No I don't actually clean) Spring Cleaning is when I change something about me or my environment and release emotional baggage, make commitments or boost my confidence. Sometimes I redecorate my room, or I will move, but this time, I changed my hair....

544319_422227514536668_1877230645_n

TO RED! Which by the way, is my FAVORITE hair color so far! It brings me confidence and good luck! Courage and spontaneity!  Check my ombre effect!

If you are looking for a Spring Change, check out this seasons hottest hair trends:

1. Colored Hair Extensions! Blended

While I did dye my hair a nice deep Auburn, I did not want to damage it so the bright red hair is actually... SHHH Hair extensions!  I originally was going to dye my hair black and get purple extensions but I then I choose to go red! You don't have to spend $150 on human hair extensions unless you want to wear them everyday. If you live near a hair supply or Sally's Beauty you can purchase synthetic hair for under $40 and if you take care of them, it should last until Summer! You can use the extensions to create the popular Ombre effect.

2. Red Red Heads!

Red is still the most fashionable color, from 2012 to 2013, from Fall to Winter to Spring! I love my Deep Auburn/ Red in the sun hair but the new Red, is Orange! Fair skin and lights eyes will be able to rock Orange/ Red without looking like a clown, any other combo probably isn't going to be the best option, sorry ladies.  So Blondes looking to for a change, try Orange!

3. Golden Blondes

For those blessed with warm undertones looking for a change, try Golden Blonde. This color is less damaging than cool blondes and can easily be Ombred with browns or auburn.

4. Dark Accent Layers

I think this is SOO Cool! Check out how they dyed the lower layers dark brown and then braided it! It just screams Beach Babe, perfect for Spring and Summer you will have the BEST hair on the block! LOVE THIS!

5. Bang Gang!

Bangs were another trend from 2012 that will be continuing on in 2013, more and more celebs are doing it, most recently, the First Lady, Kim K and Kerry Washington led the Bang Gang movement for a while.

Natural Remedies: Lemon Power!

Last week I shared the benefits of parsley, which go on and on, and I mentioned I made a tea, with lemons and honey, it was delicious! Tangy and refreshing, and SUPER good for you! This week, I want to share the benefits of the lemon! Keep drinking/eating these super foods and you will have a strong immune system, clear skin, better digestion and more!

B4D9C0FC53C94E8BA211B3CD61DCE633

1. Clear Acne

With your finger or a cotton ball, apply fresh lemon juice on acne and leave it overnight. Wash with water the following morning. There may be an uncomfortable sensation of burning at first, but it will soon disappear.

· Mix one part of freshly squeezed lemon juice with an equal part of rose or honey water. Put the mixture on affected areas for at least half an hour. Wash it afterwards with water. This application should be repeated twice daily, ideally in the morning and the evening.

Note: these remedies are safe and natural, but if acne is severe or there are open wounds, consult your doctor first.

2. Calm Anxiety, Fight Fatigue

Research has shown the vitamin C in lemon juice helps with anxiety symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and tension. You can inhale lemon oil to increase alertness as well, so next time your buying an air freshener, choose the lemon one!

Long distance walkers, world travelers, and explorers look upon the lemon as a Godsend. When fatigue sets in, they might suck lemon juice by piercing the top of the fruit with a straw, giving themselves a quick-acting medicine and a lovely refreshment.

3. Heal mouth sores, cuts

Rinsing your mouth with warm lemon juice in water helps heal cuts and sores because lemon are anti-bacterial and anti-viral. WARNING, this will burn but the more you do it, the less it will hurt.

4. Lower Fevers, Stop Colds, Sore Throats

Whenever I used to get a fever, I would drink a glass of orange juice and it would come down, Lemon juice is just as effective, the vitamin C is responsible for helping fight the infection and lower the fever.

Start taking in more vitamin C at the first sign of a cold to shorten and lessen the time and effect of the cold!! If you have a sore throat, add the juice of 1 lemon and 1 teaspoon (5ml) of sea salt to 1 cup (250ml) lukewarm water. Gargle three times a day for 1 minute to diminish the burning sensation. If it’s a case of tonsillitis, gargle every 2 hours for at least 30 seconds with the freshly squeezed juice of 1 lemon. Tilt the head back to allow the antibacterial and antiviral properties of the juice to flow into the back of the throat. You can swallow the juice when you have finished gargling thereby benefiting from an immune-boosting vitamin C shot.

5. Cure Corns and Callouses

Lemon poultices applied overnight are a good home remedy for corns and calluses. Place a slice of lemon approx 5 mm thick on to the corn, bandage and fasten. Dabbing the affected area with lemon essential oil also helps accelerate the healing process. Take care to only use the undiluted oil on the callused area using a cotton ball or Q- tip, as it is too strong for un-callused skin.

6. Cure Eczema

Add 8 drops of lemon essential oil to 1 cup (250ml) lukewarm water and 1 tablespoon (15ml) of liquid honey. Honey also has anti-inflammatory effect and strengthens the healing power of lemon.

Soak a linen cloth in the liquid, squeeze out the excess, and gently place the cloth on the affected area for 15 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day. Not only will this ease the infection, it will counter the overwhelming urge to scratch.

7. Fight bad breath

Rinse with lemon water or chew on a lemon slice to get rid of bad breath from eating, cigarettes or alcohol, BONUS Lemons help with digestion!

8. Lower blood pressure, cholesterol

One category of compound, limonoids, has been shown to reduce the production of apo B, a substance associated with higher cholesterol levels. Flavonoids, phytochemicals also found in lemons, have potential antioxidant properties. According to the American Heart Association, the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), also known as "bad" cholesterol, plays a major role in the development of fatty buildup in the arteries, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Pectin is another cholesterol-lowering property that can be found in lemons as well as other citrus fruits. Pectin is a substance that holds plant cells together and is commonly used as a gelling agent in preserves. According to an August 25, 1987 article in "The New York Times," pectin sequesters bile acid from the body, thereby requiring the body to consume stored cholesterol in order to make new bile acid. This results in the reduction of blood cholesterol.

9. Repel Bugs

To repel insects, add 20 drops of lemon oil to 1 cup (250ml) of water and spray into the air. It smells great and repels insects at the same time. Another home remedy is to place a cotton ball soaked in lemon oil in your bedroom. If you are sitting outside in the evening, apply lemon scent to skin areas not covered in clothing. Or, add 10 drops of lemon oil to 1 ½ oz of sunflower oil and rub into the skin.

10. Relieve pain

Even though it tastes bitter, lemon juice has a powerful alkaline effect in the body and is therefore a natural agent against excess acid, which is in part responsible for rheumatism. Drink the freshly squeezed juice of 1 lemon in a glass of lukewarm water 3 times a day and if you experience severe pain add the juice of 2 lemons 3 times a day.

Lemon oil has pain-relieving qualities, so to inhibit inflammation and ease pain, massage the affected area daily with several drops of lemon oil mixed with 1 tablespoon (15ml) jojoba oil.

11. Better Digestion

Lemon juice helps stimulate the production of stomach acid which in turn helps break down your food better, so you absorb more and it stimulates the digestive muscles so you can be "regular".

12. Strengthen your blood vessels

lemon juice helps strengthen your blood vessels, aiding in circulation and fighting varicose veins.

For spider veins, take 2 to 3 drops of lemon oil every day and mix in a small bowl with jojoba, avocado or almond oil and massage the affected area.

For varicose veins, add 6 drops of lemon oil to 1 ½ oz (50 ml) wheat germ oil, and 2 drops each of cypress and juniper oil. Use this mixture daily for a gentle massage of the legs from bottom to top, in the direction of the heart. For a vein and vessel-rejuvenating bath add 8 drops of lemon oil to a warm bath. Also add 4 drops of cypress oil blended with 1 tablespoon (15ml) of honey. Soak in the bath for 15 minutes and when you come out, pat your skin dry – don’t rub it.

DIY Diva: How to Add Color in a Rental

Tired of your white washed, empty looking rental? The 7 Temporary Decorating Ideas for Renters post gets so much attention I figured I'd try and find some new creative ways to let your colorful spirit show without losing your security deposit!

1. Can't paint the walls? Paint your Furniture!

Get funky and paint your furniture to add a blast of color up against white walls, instead of an accent wall, you have an accent sofa or head board!

101398193.jpg.rendition.largest

2. Wall Curtains

Give the illusion of large windows hiding behind colorful curtains by running curtain rods along the wall, extend out from an existing window or create a new "window" on a windowless wall. Alternate panels and create a "wallpaper" of curtains!

101813960.jpg.rendition.largest

3. Ugly View? Window films to the rescue!

Does your apartment have a lovely view.... of a brick wall? Or worse? A neighbor's bathroom? Try window films, they come in awesome patterns now and ones with color bathe your apartment in soft colored light in the afternoons (another way to add color besides painting the walls!)

4. Area Rugs, Throw Pillows and Blankets

Rugs not only protect the floors but give you another chance to brighten up a boring room. Pillows are really fun and funky, mix and match patterns, textures and even pillow shapes to give your guest a playful display. Accent blankets can also add color to a bed or sofa!

Things to Do: TopGolf in Alexandria, VA

The best day of last week had to have been Sunday Funday,  the BF and I took his best friend to TopGolf in Alexandria VA, it's a beer/wine bar with a driving range and mini golf. BE WARNED We waited for 2 hours to get a bay *Call ahead or come early* What's pretty cool is that TopGolf has the technology to register the golf balls to a card so when you hit the ball into a target, it registers in the computer! (IDK this might be all ranges but whateve's) So you play the game for points, or switch it up and play for distance! We played for points, and while we were getting "loose" and watching the experts around us, ordered a bucket of Coronas.

IMG_20130310_162039

It was a gorgeous day but even if it hadn't been, they have HEATED bays and stay open all year round!  It was so packed because it was such a nice day, I can only hope that the wait is much less as the newness of spring wears off. Anyways, we were struggling but by the time we got to our second game, I was clearly the winner by points, but the boys just wanted to smack the ball and show off their distance! -_-

I had a great time, but woke up yesterday SO sore in my obliques, legs and shoulders! Swinging that club doesn't seem like much but trust me, its a repetitive motion that works muscles you don't normally get! We each played 40 balls, considering how many times we swung and missed, we must have did 60 reps!

This is a great family activity, they have rental men's, women and children's clubs plus the mini golf if the kids get bored, all you do is show up and play!

5 Super Adorable Easter Egg Ideas!

easter-0B6kp5-synd2

1. Custom Patterned Easter Eggs!

Ditch boring or ty-dyed eggs this year and use stickers and tape to create pretty patterns and stripes or plaids!

Step 1: Simply cut the tape into strips to create stripes and plaids, use paper punches for letters or plant and animal shapes ($9.99 each; eksuccess.com), and try craft scissors for the wavy bands.

Step 2: Then apply the tape carefully to the shells of raw eggs, smoothing out any air bubbles, and tint according to the dye package's instructions (we used Paas).

Step 3: Once the shells dry, blow out the yolks and remove the tape to reveal your motifs.

2. 3D Easter Eggs

Pop your creativity to the next level with scrap booking flowers, basektballs, bunnies or anything you can find!

Step 1: Insert a long needle into the bottom of each egg; make a small hole, then make a slightly larger one in the top.

Step 2: Move the needle around inside the shell to break the yolk.

Step 3: Blow over the smaller hole — feel free to use a straw if you don't want to touch the egg directly — until the liquid drips out of the larger hole.

Step 4: Run the egg under water. Blow the water out, and let the shell dry overnight.

Step 5: After coloring the egg, attach fabric scrapbooking flowers ($7/150; memoryvilla.com) with tiny dots of glue. Lightly press each flower with your finger, then release.

NYC Ads "Shaming" Teen Pregnancy.... is that really so bad?

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/planned-parenthood-nyc-teen-pregnancy-psa-bloomberg-182816020.html

teen-pregnancy-collage

“The city’s money would be better spent helping teens access health care, birth control and high-quality sexual and reproductive health education, not an ad campaign intended to create shock value.”

So apparently Planned Parenthood is so mad about these new anti-teen pregnancy ads because they say it's shaming parents, and the money can be used to give them alternatives and education... while I do agree with that, people don't seem to get that the facts on these posters ARE TRUE! You will be paying child support, you won't fix a relationship, your child will lose opportunities. Are we so PC that the truth is "hurtful" Screw hurtful, know the facts!

A couple reasons why I agree with these "shock value" poster:

1. It is true that teen pregnancy has been glamorized with TV shows such as Teen Mom, this "glamourization" believe it or not actually makes teen girls think teen pregnancy is cool. These girls need a wake up call, having a baby is not cool or fun, you are messing with a life who had no choice in who it's mother is.

2. Kids having kids perpetuates the cycle of poverty, the parents either never reach their full potential or they have to work 3 times as hard to be middle class. College is not affordable to non-parenting teens, let alone a parenting teen who has to pay for school, daycare, twice as much food, clothing and utilities.

3. Teen parents have teen parents. A child of a teen mother is more likely to become a teen mother themselves because they see their mother doing OK and believe they will be OK.

4. Many children of teen mothers are supported by family, which places extra burden on grandparents who had finished raising kids. This can effect the grandparents retirement, savings and budget to support both the mother and the child.

5. Many teen mothers make the same mistakes and have more than one child within 5 years of the first, doubling all burdens the first child created.

6. Some women actually think a baby will save a relationship.

7. Many teens want to have babies to fill the void of love and affection they are not getting from their families and boyfriends.

Clearly the way we have been doing this isn't making a difference, so to NYC, I say GO FOR IT! Keep the posters up because some people need a wake up call.

Alot of teens really do have babies by accident, and they do what they can to recover, they educate themselves, they change their ways and they make a life for themselves, those are not the people who need to see this message. The truth however, is the truth. Could you imagine how many more cases of AIDS there would be if we had never gone for "shock value"?

Natural Remedies: Benefits of Parsley

image

Searching online for ways to become healthier, naturally, I came across some information on Parsley. Like the other super natural remedies I have posted (epsom salt and apple cider vinegar) Parsley has many benefits for the entire body!

You can make parsley tea by boiling fresh leaves (which you can get from any produce section for about $2!) if you are not a hardcore, unsweetened tea drinker you should add honey (raw honey is very good for you) and lemon juice. I love to chop my parsley up and throw it in a blender with watermelon hearts and a whole lemon. It's sweet and refreshing with no sugar! I have been so satisfied with my juice that I haven't tried any other recipes but I just used the last of my watermelon and may experiment with the frozen berries and OJ I have left.

Benefits of Parsley:

1. Source of Vitamin C, B12, A, K, folic acid and Iron- Basically the basic vitamins for healthy skin, immune system, eyes, brain, hair, nails, and pregnancy

2. Having parsley everyday helps in reducing blood pressure and reduces the risks related to high blood pressure such as hypertension

3. Parsley herb has some volatile oils such as myristicin, limonene, eugenol as well as alpha thujene which are antioxidants in nature. The above mentioned oils counterbalances the effects of some carcinogens (such as benzopyrenes found in cigarette fumes) and reduces the chances of getting cancer!!!!!!

4. Parsley is a power plant of chlorophyll, this helps curb the growth of bad bacteria as it has anti bacterial properties. Chlorophyll found in parsley is a good cure to stop and avoid bad breath (halitosis) for long time.

5. Parsley herb is found to be diuretic in nature which promotes healthy workings of the kidney. The diuretic found in parsley helps in getting rid of sodium and other harmful elements from the human body.

6. Having parsley herbal tea is helpful as it stimulates digestion of protein as well as fat. The tea also promotes enteric absorption and storage in the liver. It is helpful in treating diarrhea.

.7.Parsley herb improves the hormonal balance in females and it also betters the estrogen secretion. This herb is helpful in treating hormonal problems like premenstrual syndrome, menopause or delayed menstruation cycle. This herb is also known to be helpful in easing cramps during menstrual cycle.

8. Parsley does not just fight tumors, it also relieves pain, inflammation and infection. Parsley can be used to treat toothaches, arthritis pain, bruises, insect bites and chapped skin. This herb can even be used to kill parasites, including lice, while reducing discomfort.
When consumed as a tea, parsley helps to restore the body’s natural acid/alkaline balance and reduce inflammation. Certain types of pain, like arthritis pain, are caused by acid building up around the joints. This causes the joints to become swollen, painful and stiff. Parsley benefits the joints by breaking up acid and reducing inflammation, which alleviates joint pain. People who make parsley a part of their daily diet are less likely to experience rheumatic disease, including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

People who are suffering from painful bruising, piles and broken veins can also benefit from using parsley. When applied to the skin, parsley benefits the body by shrinking small blood vessels. This helps the skin heal, stops bleeding and reduces pain. Applying parsley to the skin is also believed to stimulate hair growth, increase collagen production, diminish the appearance of wrinkles and firm the skin.

9. When eaten or consumed as a tea, parsley benefits the heart, improves the quality of the blood and strengthens the immune system. Parsley strengthens the heart by supplying the body with folate, or vitamin B9. Folate neutralizes an amino acid known as homocysteine, which can damage the blood vessels in large amounts. Regularly consuming parsley will protect against cardiovascular disease, stroke, heart attack and atherosclerosis.

In addition to protecting the heart, parsley benefits the body by regulating blood sugar, lowering blood pressure and stimulating the production of red blood cells. This herb also supports immune system function and provides the body with several powerful antioxidants. Since parsley increases immunity, it is often used to combat the common cold, bronchitis and the flu. Parsley is also effective at drying mucous, which reduces congestion and helps to control allergies.

10. For women, parsley can be especially beneficial. Not only can parsley possibly prevent breast cancer, but it can also relieve menstrual pain. When consumed internally, parsley relieves pain, reduces bloating and causes uterine contractions. This tones the uterus, stimulates menstruation and can even induce labor in pregnant women. Some doctors believe that parsley is also beneficial in toning the male prostate. This makes the prostate stronger and less prone to infection.

Parsley is an herb that benefits the body so many different ways. This herb can be used externally to fight infection, improve the appearance of the skin and naturally relieve pain. Internally, parsley benefits almost every bodily system. Not only does this herb protect the heart and boost immunity, but it might even be an effective natural anticancer treatment.

As you can see Parsley is another amazing natural remedy! Start incorporating Parsley into your daily diet to natural boost every system in your body!
